The Centre for Human Rights and Duties, Panjab University, Chandigarh commemorated World Mental Health Day on the theme ” Mental Health is a Universal Human Right”. An awareness session was organised by the Centre in collaboration with Department of Social Welfare, Women and Child Development to apprise the students and faculty about the centrally sponsored social welfare schemes for transgenders as well as acquaint the students with the legal entitlements under the The Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019. The session was led by Sh. Amit Kumar (Counsellor) from the Transgender Protection Cell, UT, Chandigarh.
The Chairperson, Dr. Upneet Kaur Mangat apprised the attendees regarding the proactive measures taken by the Panjab University for inclusion of transgenders in the mainstream including tuition fee waivers, hostel accommodation as well as creation of the Permanent Anti-Discrimination Cell for Welfare of Transgender Students. She also shared the World Mental Health Day casts a responsibility on everyone in society to be sensitive to concerns of transgenders and treat them with respect and non-discrimination.
Furthermore, post -lunch the Centre launched ‘Haqooq’ a cultural initiative of Student Society of Centre for Human Rights and Duties to commemorate ‘World Mental Health Day’. The film ‘Dear Zindagi’ was screened which delves on mental health issues in today’s world. The screening was followed by discussion “On Making Mental Health a Priority & Why Mental Health Matters” led by Manavjit Malik (founder of Haqooq), Gurdeep Singh, Kavita & Ashima research scholar’s of the Centre.
