More than 200 players to perform Mallakhamb
Chandigarh, June 8 :- The Indian traditional game Mallakhamb today began in the ongoing Khelo India Youth Games-2021 in Panchkula. Notably, Mallakhamb has a history that dates back to the twelfth century and a text named ‘Manas-olhas’ that belongs to the Chalukya kings in 1135 A.D also has mention this traditional game.
Three types of Mallakhamb will be performed in the Khelo India Youth Games being held at Panchkula. Of these three, two types including Pole Mallakhamb and Rope Mallakhamb would be performed by the girls, while boys would be performing three types of Mallakhamb including Pole, Rope and Hanging Mallakhamb.
Divulging more details in this regard to Dr. Ramesh Indolia, President of Mallakhamb Federation of India, team competitions, individual competitions and apparels competitions in the Mallakhamb will be held in which more than 200 players are participating.
In Mallakhamb, the player is given 60 to 90 seconds in which the player has to make 18 to 24 mudras in which the D-1, D-2 judges judge the mudras, while E-1, E-2 and E- 3 judges check elimination mistakes.
Mallakhamb was included in the University Games from the year 1958 and after that, from 1980 it was separated to form a Federation. After this, in the year 2011, the game started getting grants.
Dr. Ramesh Indolia further shared that the National Sports Federation led by Prime Minister, Sh. Narendra Modi has opened 100 centres in India, of which 5 centres are being run in Haryana as well. Similarly, 6 centres have been opened in Delhi and coaches have also been appointed to properly run these centres so that children can be encouraged to take up this indigenous game.
Mallakhamb has been included for the first time in Khelo India Youth Games and it is believed that in the coming time this sport has every possibility to get listed in the Paralympics and Olympics.
Dr. Ramesh Indolia further shared that in the Tokyo Olympics all the equipment related to the Mallakhamb had reached Tokyo from India, but due to the Pandemic, this game was not held in the Olympics, but it is expected that Mallakhamb will be included in the upcoming Olympics.
He said that India is the world champion in Mallakhamb and will remain the world champion in the times to come. In this traditional game, Yogesh Malviya has received Dronacharya Award, while Himani Parab has also won Arjuna Award in Mallakhamb.
Besides this, a stipend fund of Rs. 10,000 is also being given to the Mallakhamb players who get medals at the National Level. Presently this stipend fund is being given to 105 children.
Dr. Ramesh Indolia shared that the Government of India is providing Olympic like facilities for Mallakhamb as well, which is a commendable thing.
