1.The purnima which takes place in the month of Ashwin is what we popularly call the Sharad Purnima. It has great importance for the Hindus and they celebrate it with joy and splendour. The purnima is believed to bring happiness to your life. In Bengal, this purnima is famously known as Kojagari Pooja.

2. Sharad Purnima is closely linked with Shiva and Parvati. It is believed that their son Kartikeya was born on Sharad Purnima which also gave it the name of Kumar Purnima. On this day, unmarried girls worship sun and moon for prosperity in their future lives.

3. On this day the moon is brightly lit in the sky and parvati and shankar are attributed to it’s glory. The moon completes 16 stages of evolution to appear in its full form. Plenty of people fast on this day, specially the devotees of Shiva and Parvati.

4. Goddess Laxmi is also believed to have been born on this very day. That is why she is worshipped on Sharad Purnima all over India. Another story that people believe in is that on the night of full moon of Sharad Purnima, goddess Laxmi visit the Earth and go to everybody’s home. She blesses the one who are awake on this auspicious night. However, she doesn’t stay where everybody is asleep. Thus, plenty of people stay up all night to receive her blessings.

5.It is popularly called Raas Purnima in Mathura, the birth place of Lord Krishna. It is said that on this day Lord Krishna started dancing with his gopis at night and it was the beginning of all his great creations. Thus, popular dance of Krishna is replicated and performed in many places on this very day.
