‘Fashion Designer’ as a Career choice in the Corporate World
Lecture series ‘Learn the ropes with alumni’ was held today at University Institute of Fashion Technology & Vocational Development Panjab University Chandigarh with Sarika Rana. She pursued her post-graduation in Fashion and Lifestyle Technology from UIFT, Panjab University. Dr. Anu H. Gupta, Chairperson UIFT & VD, welcomed Sarika and complimented her on her achievements.

After completing her Masters at UIFT, Sarika started experimenting with the skills that she learnt during her studies at Panjab University. She shared her experience when she started fresh by working at 612 IVY League. She elaborated on the process of designing for kids’ wear brands. For change, after spending 6 years in 612 IVY League, she took up a new job as a merchandiser. Her role was to check the feasibility of designs made by designers. She emphasised on taking risks, moving out of one’s comfort zone to get more exposure. From her experience, she details making mood boards and theme boards, how to choose a colour palette and source fabric.
She elaborated on the roles of a designer, from forecasting to range planning, to software designing, to sampling, to photoshoots. She then detailed the software that industries use and asked students to learn this software very thoroughly, as it will help them do their work easily if they choose to work in any industry. The webinar was engaging and students got solution for many questions pertaining to their career in Fashion Industry.
Around 80 students and alumni joined her webinar, which was organized by Ms. Parneet Brar, guest faculty at UIFT.
