Ushering the festival of lights in a unique and meaningful manner, Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women, Chandigarh organised a host of events aiming to not only spread festive cheer but also to raise awareness about green Diwali celebrations. The Character Building Committee of the college organised a 6-day event titled ‘Deepmala Utsav’ that included various competitions and activities, and culminated with a vibrant cultural extravaganza and an exhibition. The competitions that were part of the Deepmala Utsav included Poshak Mithai, Slogan Writing, Diya Decoration and Card Making on the theme of ‘Safe and Green Diwali’, and Lessons for Life- a video competition on favourite character from Ramayana. Besides the competitions, a Stone Painting Workshop was also organised and a nukkad natak on ‘Say no to crackers’ was also presented to sensitise students about the harmful effects of crackers. On the final day of the event, an exhibition was held that was inaugurated by Principal Dr. Nisha Bhargava. The grand utsav culminated with an exciting cultural programme comprising of enthralling dance and song performances, and a felicitation ceremony. Speaking on this occasion, Principal Dr. Nisha Bhargava highlighted the origin of Diwali festival in the epic Ramayana- an eternal source of guidance to mankind. She impressed upon the students to assimilate the learnings from Ramayana in their lives, like maintaining equanimity in the face of challenges, importance of dharma over emotions, significance of persistence and dedication, and so on.

Seeking to spread the message of an eco-friendly Diwali, the college also participated enthusiastically in the Department of Environment and Department of Education, Chandigarh Administration’s Anti Cracker Campaign on the theme ‘Swachh Diwali Green Diwali’. The activities conducted under this campaign included Anti Crackers Oath, Anti Cracker Rally by the Swachhta Committee and NSS units, Painting, Poster making and Slogan Writing Competitions by Character Building Committee, Poem Recitation and Essay Writing on Air Pollution by Swachhta Committee- Languages and an online awareness lecture on Green Diwali by Dr. Shafila, Department of Environment Science of the college. The campaign received encouraging response as students and volunteers participated in it wholeheartedly, making it a success.
