The Department of Zoology at Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women, Chandigarh, under the aegis of Institution Innovation Council and MCM Vigyan Manch, organised an industrial cum field visit to Global Apiaries India, Dera Bassi. During the visit, Mr. Madan Sharma, Proprietor, Global Apiaries India shared with the students the story of his entrepreneurial journey and motivated them to go for start-ups. Referring to beekeeping as a technology that is simple, accessible and affordable, Mr. Sharma emphasised that beekeeping is not only a source of honey and a variety of products but it also enhances the productivity of crops due to better pollination and seed setting. Adding that there is a vast scope for expansion of beekeeping in India, he said that a number of small-scale industries depend upon bees and bee products. He further shared that the success of beekeeping depends upon proper understanding of the biology and behaviour of honeybees and their scientific management techniques. Mr. Sharma motivated the students to apply their scientific knowledge and to explore the potential of biotechnological interventions for improving the quality and quantity of products.
Principal Dr. Nisha Bhargava lauded the efforts of Zoology Department to equip students with practical knowledge and insights into the industry. She expressed hope that the visit will motivate the students to consider entrepreneurship as a career option.
