The Postgraduate Department of Sociology at Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women, Chandigarh organised an international webinar on the topic ‘Sociology of Food: Some Reflections’. Prof. Madhu Nagla, Former Professor and Head, Department of Sociology, MDU, Rohtak, was the resource person for this webinar. The webinar basically highlighted how food has emerged as a new field within sociological research. Prof. Nagla’s discussion focused on the relationship between food and people. She shared her views from different aspects on the respective topic and its changing trends in the contemporary society. The expert also highlighted as to how this theme will play a significant role in future in the area of social science research which needs to be studied by researchers, policy makers, social workers, etc.
Principal Dr. Nisha Bhargava lauded this initiative of the Sociology Department to educate students about the social, symbolic and political-economic roles of food, including production, distribution and consumption. She added that this branch of sociology holds immense importance with respect to opening up of new avenues for research work and more particularly exchanges between social sciences and food.
