MCM holds national symposium on Digital Identity

The Postgraduate Department of Economics at Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women, Chandigarh organised a national symposium on the topic ‘Digital Identity: Catalyst for Digital Economy’. Mr. Sumnesh Joshi, Deputy Director General, Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) was the resource person and Prof. Ajeet Angral, Consultant UTs of J&K and Ladakh, AICTE, New Delhi was Special Guest on this occasion. In the inaugural address, Principal Dr. Nisha Bhargava lauded this initiative of the Economics Department to boost the knowledge quotient of the participants on the highly contextual topic of digital identity that not only enables civic and social empowerment but also makes possible real and inclusive economic gains. Drawing attention to disparity in the growth of the rural and the urban areas due to various factors including challenges in access to education, health, banking services, etc., Dr. Bhargava highlighted that digital identity ensures democratised access to services and resources.
Explaining the transformation from traditional form of identity on paper to digital identity in the form of Aadhaar, Mr. Joshi elaborated on the process of issuance of Aadhaar. Mr. Joshi emphasised on how the convergence of digital identity and digital financial transactions can lead India to achieve its goal of becoming a $5 trillion economy. He also discussed as to  how digital identity has opened doors for many financial sector reforms like UPI based payment systems, e-KYC and providing Direct Benefit Transfers to the beneficiaries. The speaker informed the students that digital identity is not only limited to economic and financial aspects but also to social aspects like migrant workers, missing children identification, etc. The enlightening session recorded the presence of 250 participants.
