Chandigarh 02 Dec 2021
In keeping with this year’s theme of World AIDS Day i.e. ‘End inequalities. End AIDS. End Pandemics’, the NSS units and Red Ribbon Club of Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women, Chandigarh commemorated the day with an awareness programme at the campus. The programme envisioned to create awareness so as to dispel the misconceptions and taboos related to HIV/AIDS, and to spread the message of ending the inequalities caused due to such taboos. During the programme, the NSS volunteers displayed posters disseminating information about HIV/AIDS, its causes, the symptoms of the disease and the initiatives taken up by the Government of India to curb this deadly disease. In an interactive session, they discussed various myths and taboos related to the disease, thereby helping in promoting among the college youth a scientific outlook towards AIDS.
Principal Dr. Nisha Bhargava underlined the importance of this awareness initiative by stressing upon the fact that the myths associated with AIDS can add to the patients’ physical, social and mental stress. She added that the stigma attached to this disease needs to be eradicated, and the only way to do that is by generating greater awareness.
