The Foreign Students Cell and Equal Opportunity Cell of Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women, Chandigarh, under the aegis of IQAC, organised an online national workshop on ‘Diversity Sensitisation: Issues and Challenges’. Prof. Abha Chauhan, Department of Sociology, University of Jammu and President of Indian Sociological Society, was the resource person for this enlightening workshop. Over 145 students and faculty members participated in the workshop. As she highlighted the various issues and challenges in diversity sensitisation, Prof. Chauhan said that when it comes to countries like India, the issue of diversity takes different connotations. Stressing on practice of respect and tolerance for others’ culture and way of life, Prof. Chauhan stated that inclusive policies are imperative for eradication of discrimination. She stated that the goal of a peaceful society and a progressive nation can only be achieved through mutual understanding of others’ background and accepting others’ culture harmoniously. Pointing out to the fact that violence resulting from insensitivity towards diversity leads to economic inequalities, job losses and migration, Prof. Chauhan said that integration and synchronisation help in strengthening the society. She especially emphasised on the metanarrative task of teachers, students and researchers to dismantle the prevalent discrimination based on diversity and to reconstruct our society into a uniform and universal one. The participants found the workshop immensely engaging and felt motivated to change their and others’ outlook towards diversity.
Principal Dr. Nisha Bhargava highlighted the need to break the shackles of stereotypical thinking for a better society. She added that every individual is unique and we must endeavour to respect and appreciate one’s individuality, and live in harmony with each other for a peaceful and prosperous society.
