Chandigarh,11 jul 2021
Garnering praise from various quarters, including Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi and the stalwarts of Indian cricket like Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman, for her historic catch during the Women’s T20 cricket match between India and England at Northampton, Harleen Deol- a student of BA final year at Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women, Chandigarh has made the institution proud with her feat. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in an Instagram story that was also tweeted by Union Minister for I & B and Youth Affairs and Sports Mr. Anurag Thakur, congratulated Harleen terming her catch ‘phenomenal’. The seemingly impossible catch on the boundary line during Harleen’s 10th T20 match for India has earned her the titles of ‘WonderWoman’ and ‘Superwoman’, which reiterates the way students are groomed at MCM to be women of substance. Congratulating Harleen for her stupendous catch that has etched her name in cricketing history in bold letters, Principal Dr. Nisha Bhargava said that the institution feels extremely proud of Harleen’s achievement and announced that the college will be honouring Harleen and her family and will also give her a cash award, citation and free of cost education henceforth. Dr. Bhargava informed that Harleen was also honoured by Dr. Kiran Bedi, the then Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry during the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the college in 2018. She added that it is a matter of immense pride for the college to have its three students in Indian Cricket Team including Harleen Deol, the other two being Taniya Bhatia and Riddhima. The entire DAV fraternity congratulated Harleen for her superlative performance and wished her luck.
