The Department of Zoology and Character-Building Committee of Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women, Sector 36-A, Chandigarh under the aegis of MCM Vigyan Manch, celebrated National Wildlife Week with organisation of many events under the theme ‘Partnerships for Wildlife Conservation’, sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology & Renewable energy, Chandigarh Administration. The week-long celebration aimed to sensitize the students about the importance of flora and fauna, and their conservation and protection through various events including Wildlife Search in the Backyard; PowerPoint Presentation ‘Animal Behaviour’; Pebble painting; Extempore Speech on topics related to the theme ‘Wildlife Conservation; Debate on the topic ‘Advantages and Disadvantages of Wildlife Tourism’; Poster making on the theme ‘Endangered Aquatic Wildlife’; Photography contest to create awareness regarding the role of insects in maintaining ecological balance and Hand Shadow Puppet Competition.
A Nukkad Natak highlighting the issues related to wildlife was staged by the student volunteers of MCM Eco-Club ‘Parivesh’ to create awareness about wildlife conservation. As many as 150 students from different streams participated enthusiastically in all the events. Students were given participation certificates and the winners were awarded prizes. Principal of the college, Dr. Nisha Bhargava said that wildlife is an important part of our natural heritage, and it plays a significant role in stabilizing the environment. She appreciated the efforts of participants in highlighting issues like illegal wildlife trade, habitat destruction, invasive species, pollution, and climate change, and motivated the students to work towards safeguarding the lives of the endangered species.
