Hails Hockey India team for beating New Zealand in opener

“I am confident of winning a medal in Tokyo”, were the words of the Saikhom Mirabai Chanu three days ago and now she has delivered her promise by clinching silver medal, the first for India in Tokyo Olympics, described Punjab Sports Minister Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi, while terming Saikhom Mirabai Chanu ‘Pride of the nation.
Rana Sodhi congratulated Weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu for her amazing feat of bagging the Silver medal for India in 49 Kg category. Tweeting “Congratulations @mirabai_chanu for opening India’s medals tally at #Tokyo2020 with a silver. A very proud moment for India”, the Sports Minister also congratulated her Assistant Coach from Punjab Sandeep Kumar, who hails from village Bara of Jalandhar district and had participated in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics besides 1998 Commonwealth Games held in Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) winning Bronze medal (69 Kg category) in the latter event. He is serving with the Punjab Police as Inspector.
Earlier, Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi also hailed Hockey India team for beating New Zealand in Olympics opener with 3-2. He tweeted “Congratulations TeamIndia on your superb performance @Tokyo2020. #MenInBlue beat #NZL 3-2 in opener.” He said, it was a proud moment for all of us that all three scores were converted into reality by Punjab players Harmanpreet Singh and Rupinder Pal Singh and Punjab is proud of them.
