 Chandigarh, December 1 2021

The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today condemned chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi for surpassing all records of nepotism including those set by his predecessor Capt Amarinder Singh by appointing controversial and tainted legislator Madan Lal Jalalpur’s son as Director, Administration of the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL).

In a statement here, senior SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia said it was shocking that the chief minister had totally surrendered to the whims and fancies of his ministers as well as Congress legislators and was making one appointment after another at their beck and call without any regard to the future of the youth of the State. “The chief minister seems to have forgotten his own government’s slogan of ‘ghar ghar naukari’ and seems to have changed it to ‘kewal Congress ghar naukari’.

Mr Bikram Majithia said within days of taking over the reins of the State, Mr Charanjit Channi had appointed home minister Sukhjinder Randhawa’s son-in-law Tarun Vir Singh Lehal as an Additional Advocate General bypassing the normal procedure and using the “exceptional circumstances” clause to appoint him to the post. “The exceptional circumstances clause had to be used because the home minister’s son-in-law did not fulfill the criteria for being appointed as an Additional Advocate General”.

Mr Majithia said now in another controversial move, the chief minister had rewarded Congress legislator Madan Lal Jalalpur whose name had earlier surfaced in the attack on a mining officer as well as an illegal distillery which had been unearthed in Ghanaur. He said Jalalpur’s son Gagandeep had been appointed the Director, Administration of PSPCL. He said besides this even Senior Congressy Leader Amrik Singh Dhillon’s grandson Karanvir Singh had been appointed Director, Administration of Punjab State Transmission Corporation Limited (PSTCL).

Stating that these appointments as well as all other illegal appointments made on compassionate grounds by Channi’s predecessor Capt Amarinder Singh would be reviewed once the SAD-BSP alliance government was formed in the State, Mr Majithia said “we will scrap all the illegal appointments be it the out of turn appointment of former chief minister Beant Singh’s grandson as a Deputy Superintendent of Police, Congress legislator Rakesh Pandey’s son as a Tehsildar and former minister Gurpreet Singh Kangar’s son-in-law as an excise and taxation officer.

Mr Majithia said it was shameful that the Congress government did not have any concern to fulfill the promises made to the youth of the State. “The Congress government has presided over the reduction of State jobs by refusing to fill vacant posts. It has also failed to give the promised Rs 2,500 per month unemployment allowance promised to the youth. It has also reneged on its promise to open entrepreneurship options for youth through various schemes all of which have been consigned to the dust bin. Even now at the fag-end of its tenure in office, the Congress government is keen to dole out jobs to its own kin rather than doing anything for the youth of the State who are protesting on the roads and demanding the chief minister fulfill the promises made to them”, Mr Majithia added.
