On the 3rd day of Science Week at Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women, Chandigarh, the Postgraduate Department of Chemistry, Department of Environment Science and Department of Physics organised various activities under the banner of MCM Vigyan Manch. The Departments of Chemistry and Environment Science, in collaboration with SAIF/CIL, Panjab University, organised a two-day field visit cum workshop on ‘Sophisticated Analytical Instrumentation’ under the aegis of Synergistic Training Program Utilizing the Scientific and Technological Infrastructure (STUTI). The inaugural session of this workshop was graced by the presence of Principal Dr. Nisha Bhargava, Prof. Ganga Ram Chaudhary, Honorary Director, SAIF/CIL, PUC and Prof. H.P.S. Kang, Associate Professor, SAIF/CIL, PUC. The session began with MCM and SAIF, PUC sharing their innovative and sustainable practices. The technical lectures on ‘UV-visible Spectroscopy’ and ‘NMR Basics and Applications’ were delivered by Dr. Shailendra, Research Scientist, SAIF/CIL PUC and Dr. Rohit Sharma,
Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, Panjab University respectively, followed by a workshop on sophisticated analytical instruments SEM and NMR. On the same day, the Physics Department of the college held a webinar on ‘Emerging Topics and Opportunities in Physical Science’ by Dr. Debabrata Deb, Assistant Professor, School of Physics and Material Science, Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, Patiala. Dr. Deb enlightened the students about various funding agencies for research, summer internship programmes in reputed institutes and, national and international fellowship programmes like JRF, DAAD, TWAS. Earlier, on day 2 of the Science Week, the Department of Botany organised a National Level Online Quiz in Botany. The theme of the quiz was Integrated Approach in Science and Technology for A Sustainable Future. Over 89 participants from different states including Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Gujrat, Karnataka, Maharashtra and U.T Chandigarh participated in the quiz that was based on the facts related to science and technology, and sustainable practices adopted in the field of Botany. The Science Week celebrations at MCM are being sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology and Renewable Energy, Chandigarh Administration.
Principal Dr. Nisha Bhargava lauded the efforts of MCM Vigyan Manch and the Science Departments to mark Science Day 2022 in a befitting manner with immensely relevant events. She added that the wonders of Science have contributed in significant development of society and such endeavours are important to motivate the youth to work for advancement of science and also promote scientific temper among others.
