The Science Week celebrations at Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women, Chandigarh kickstarted with a webinar on ‘Nanotech and Future Implications’. The Science Week, sponsored by the Department of Science and Technology and Renewable Energy, Chandigarh Administration and held under the aegis of MCM Vigyan Manch, entails a weeklong celebration of Science Day with an array of events thoughtfully curated to celebrate the spirit of scientific enquiry and the role of science in our lives. Organised by the college’s Postgraduate Department of Chemistry, the webinar on Nanotech and Future Implications had Dr. Ashish Pal, Scientist-F and Professor, Indian Institute of Nanotechnology (INST), Mohali as the invited speaker. Around 152 students and faculties participated in the session. Dr. Pal’s talk focused on the basics of nanoscience and implications of nanotechnology across the globe by bridging the gap between knowledge given in books and research happening in laboratories. He correlated the latest development in energy, environment, science and medicine with ancient practices of Bhasama, Ayurveda and Unani. He also discussed applications of nanotechnology in curbing various forms of environmental pollution. The recent advancements in nanoparticle mediated drug delivery and concept of electric vehicle were also discussed. The participants found the webinar highly enlightening.
Principal Dr. Nisha Bhargava asserted that keeping in mind the theme of National Science Day 2022 i.e. ‘Integrated Approach in Science and Technology for a Sustainable Future’, the Science Week celebrations at MCM aim to deliberate on ways an integrated approach can help in problem solving and realisation of sustainable development goals. She motivated the students to take inspiration from scientists like Sir C V Raman and work for promotion of science for the benefit of humanity.
