Kerala is known to have the highest literacy rate in India and there is no doubt in it as in news it was recently announced that eighteen members or transgender community in Kerala completed their secondary school education successfully. The examination is conducted every year bythe Kerala State Literacy Mission Authority (KSLMA). This enabled them to further receive education and also get a job. It could be considered a great step towards modern India wherein we happily accept people of transgender community so that they can work alongside us.
It is the first batch of transgender that has cleared their 12th grade examination and there is hope that we will have more people appearing for the exams next year.
Kerala is the first state in India which has implemented the policy of “Samanwaya” an education program which was initiated by KSLMA and Social Justice Department in 2018 for helping transgender community to adapt to the society.
A total of 22 people appeared in the exams from the community and 18 of them managed to pass with flying colors. They belong to different districts including Athanamthitta, Thiruvananthapuram and Kollam.
The community members are happy with the decision of the government as it has enabled them to get a livelihood. Education up to 12th is mandatory for almost all jobs in India and this policy has opened new gates for the community. A total of 918 transgenders are interested to be a part of this policy in Kerala. Government believes that the number would further increase with time. It was also advised to accept these people as a part of the community and not differentiate against them.
