Exhibition of banana species to be main attraction
Banana production, processing, export possibilities to be discussed

A unique two-day banana festival is being celebrated in Burhanpur district of Madhya Pradesh on 20th and 21st February. Being organized by Burhanpur District Administration, famous banana scientists and banana producers of the country will discuss issues related to banana production, export possibilities, economic prosperity of banana growers.
Exhibition of different species of banana will be the main attraction. Issues related to banana plantation, processing, manufacturing of food items, arrangement of crop sale and storage, increasing the possibilities of banana export will be discussed. There will also be discussions with women of self-help groups related to banana production and making useful handicraft artefacts from banana fibre.
Burhanpur is the only banana producing district of Madhya Pradesh. Banana has been included in One District One Product Scheme and recently Burhanpur has received a special award at the national level. The area of banana in Burhanpur district is 23650 hectares and more than 18000 farmers are growing banana crop. Annual production is more than 16 lakh metric tons. The business of banana sales is around Rs 1700 crore annually. Interested investors have also been invited in the field of production.
Madhya Pradesh has secured its place in the global agricultural export market. Currently, 30 thousand metric tons of bananas are being exported annually from Burhanpur district to Iraq, Iran, Dubai, Bahrain and Turkey. The fame of Burhanpur banana has reached far and wide. The hard work of banana producing farmers and the support of the government has given a new identity to Burhanpur.
