The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) during its ongoing campaign against corruption in the state has arrested ASI Gurdeep Singh, posted at police station Guruharsahai in Ferozepur district, red handed while he was accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000.
Disclosing this here today, the spokesperson of the VB informed that the accused ASI was arrested based on the statement and recorded evidence presented by the complainant, Gurmeet Singh, a resident of Khundar Uttaar village in Ferozepur district.
He further added that the complainant has approached the VB and reported that a case had been registered against his younger brother at the police station Guruharsahai, which was later resolved amicably. However, when the complainant had submitted another application related to the same case at the police station, ASI Gurdeep Singh summoned his brother to the station, detained him, and demanded ₹150,000 for his release. When the complainant couldn’t pay the bribe amount, the ASI arrested his brother in this case. Subsequently, under the threat of obtaining a seven-day remand and opposing bail of his brother, the said ASI extorted Rs 10,000 as a bribe from him. The complainant further alleged that the ASI had demanded an additional Rs 10,000 to exclude his brother’s phone and wallet from the case property, and this demand was recorded by the complainant.
The spokesperson stated that acting on this complaint, a team from Vigilance Bureau, Ferozepur range, laid a trap and caught ASI Gurdeep Singh red-handed, accepting Rs 10,000 bribe from the complainant in the presence of two official witnesses.
In this regard a case under prevention of corruption act has been registered against the accused ASI at VB police station Ferozepur range and further investigation into this case was under progress, he said.
