Veteran Punjabi writer and successful translator Prem Avtar Raina passed away in Ludhiana

The last rites will be held on November 23 at 11.30 am in Ludhiana.

Having spent most of his life in Amritsar, Prem Avtar Raina, a Punjabi writer and successful translator who lived with his son Dr. Navprem Singh Professor, Gardening (Punjab Agriculture University) for the last ten or twelve years, has passed away in Ludhiana. He was 87 years old. He was not well for some time.
Prof. Gurbhajan Singh Gill, chairman of Punjabi Folk Heritage Academy, while paying tribute to Prem Avatar Raina ji, said that Raina ji was a warm-hearted person who had deep love for Shabad culture. He had been regularly participating in Punjabi Bhavan activities for the past several years but had not been coming for some time now.
Important books translated by Prem Avtar Raina ji include “At Midnight (Pearl S. Buck),” Problems of Modern Soudraya-Bodh (Dremov, Anatoly),
“Salute to the Rising Sun” (Anton Chekhov), “Babar” (novel Pirimkul Kadyrov), “My Story” (Flavia)
“Maharaja Ranjit Singh: State System, Economy and Society” (J.S. Grewal), “Haveli Wali Rani Sahiba” (Anton Chekhov)
Apart from “Manto’s Letters: The Names of Uncle Sam”, there are also some children’s books on Iron Wolf. A very good translation of selected poetry of Parveen Shakir was also done by Rainaji.
According to Prem Avtar Raina’s son Dr. Navprem Singh, his last rites will be held on 23rd November at 11.30 am in Civil Lines (Near Dhobi Ghat) crematorium behind Arya College Ludhiana. Dr. Navprem Singh’s contact number is 81461 00711.
