Webinar on “India-China Relations with Focus on Current Status on LAC” held at PU

Chandigarh September 30:

Department of Defence and National Security Studies Panjab University, Chandigarh organized a Webinar on the theme “India-China Relations with Focus on Current Status on LAC” on 30th September 2022. Maj. Gen (Dr.) G G Dwivedi (Retd.) was the key speaker.

Dr Jaskaran Singh Waraich, Chairperson of the Department of Defence and National Security Studies, welcomed the guests present for the event.

Maj Gen. Dwivedi opined that history and geography play a greater role in building relations between state, organization, and society. These factors are more relevant in modern states. Historically, the India-China contact dates back to the Mahabharata period. Strategic thinkers like Chanakya and many Chinese pilgrims and travelers like Fa Hien, Hiuen Tsang, also described China in their work.

India-China was never an immediate neighbor as Tibet has always acted as a buffer zone between the two countries. The border dispute between India and China arose when China invaded and occupied Tibet in 1949. While explaining the 1914 Simla Agreement, Major General Dwivedi highlighted that although China did not accept the agreement, the fact remains that Tibet was an independent country at that time. He said that historically Tibet was never completely ruled by China, but there were times when China ruled Tibet. And since it never accepted the 1914 Simla agreement, it continues to claim Arunachal Pradesh as South Tibet.

In the recent scenario despite active political and diplomatic engagements between the two countries their overall relations remained tense. On the global stage, China wants to project itself as an equal partner to America. He further mentioned that despite our border disputes we still are the largest economic partners. The webinar was concluded with a vote of thanks by Mr. Mandeep Singh. It was attended by the students, research Scholars, and the faculty of the department.
