20th May, 2022, Chandigarh
To mark the ‘World Biodiversity Day’, the Department of Environment, UT Chandigarh Administration in collaboration with Yuvsatta-NGO & Eco-Club of St. Joseph’s Sr. Sec. School organized an ‘Inter-School Poster Making Contest’ at St. Joseph’s on the theme of ‘Plastic Pollution Affects Biodiversity & Healthy Planet’. Sh. Debendra Dalai, IFS, Director, Department of Environment, UT Chandigarh was the Chief Guest on the occasion.
Over 300 students from 26 prominent schools of the city participated in the endeavour. Prominent amongst those who were present on the occasion included Mrs. Monica Chawla, Principal, Mr. Pramod Sharma, Coordinator, Yuvsatta, Mr. Sandeep Joshi-cartoonist and environmentalist Mr. Kulbhushan Kanwar.
Appreciating the beautiful art-work of young students, the Chief Guest- Sh.Debendra Dalai said that there is a culture of throw-away society-a human social concept strongly influenced by consumerism, whereby the society tends to use items once only, from disposable packaging, and consumer products are not designed for reuse or lifetime use. And this over consumption is leading to accelerated loss of plants, animals and habitats. Today, this event was organized as part of the ongoing S.T.O.P.-Students Take on Plastics initiative launched in schools by their department with NGO-Yuvsatta, as Plastic pollution can have a long-term negative impact on terrestrial ecosystems and biodiversity. Much of it ends up in landfills, where it may take up to 1,000 years to decompose, leaching potentially toxic substances into the soil, sediments and rivers. We aim to take action to turn these problems into solutions by greater community involvement, especially of youngsters in schools and colleges to stop single use plastics.
The five best participating students in three categories were declared winners of the Inter-School Poster Making Contest. The names are as follows;
Sub-junior category (up to Class V): Anshika of KBDAV Sr. Sec. Public School, Jaipriya of AKSIPS-41, Lalit of Govt. Girls Model Sr. Sec. School, Sector 18C, Sidh Garg of Chitkara International School and Parnika Kaushal of Gurukul Global School.

In the concluding remarks, Ms.Monica Chawla, Principal shared that participating in issues like biodiversity loss will go a long way in developing critical understanding of such subjects amongst children as right from a young age, children start to love nature, plants and animals around them.
