153rd Gandhi Jayanti celebrations at Gandhi Smarak, Chandigarh

Chandigarh 2 October:

Gandhi Smarak Nidhi celebrated the 153rd Birth Anniversary of Mahatama Gandhi, the Father of Nation, and the 118th Birth Anniversary of Bharat Ratna Ex-Prime Minister Sh. Lal Bahadur Shastri with great enthusiasm and fervor at Gandhi Smarak situated at Sector-16. The Governor of Punjab and Administrator UT Chandigarh Sh. Banwarilal Purohit was the Chief Guest and lighted the lamp and paid tribute to the statues of both, Mahatama Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri. He paid respects and said that truth and non-violence are the principles to remember Gandhi Ji today. His sole aim was to change the hearts of people through truth and non-violence. Gandhiji said that the country and the world should stay away from seven sins, for example, politics without principles, wealth without work, pleasures without intellect, knowledge without character, trade without rules, science without empathy, and worship without sacrifice. We should make our lives simple.

He said that Gandhi Ji used to say that the earth gives human beings a lot to fulfill their requirements but not to satisfy man’s greed. He believed that if corruption ends in our country then our country would touch the sky. He emphasized transparency in work. Reviewing the Gandhi Museum, Governor said that the people of Tricity should visit the museum in order to learn from Gandhiji’s life. He also heard the recording on the telephone of the iconic speech delivered by Gandhiji in Birla Sadan on 11/06/1947.

During the function, Additional Solicitor, Satya Pal Jain said that Mahatama Gandhi organized many movements in the country and the unique specialty of all was that these movements were peaceful and nonviolent. He further said that the example set by the honesty of Lal Bahadur Shastri cannot be seen in today’s political leaders. Leaders should do what they say.

Dev Raj Tyagi, Director, in his address preached that we all should follow the path shown by Mahatama Gandhi. Gandhiji’s message for the youth was that we can become good citizens of India by focusing on character building, awareness towards responsibilities, positive attitude, the constant progress of capabilities, having an aim, being aware of good health and hygiene, spiritual upliftment, reformation of mistakes and management of duties.

Gandhi Chitra-Katha (Punjabi) and Book were highlighted. Members of the community participated in Swachhta Abhiyaan, spinning the wheel, offering floral tribute, and singing Gandhiji’s favorite bhajan ‘Vaishnavjan’. Students and teachers of Blue Bird Public School, Panchkula mesmerized the audience with melodious bhajans. Eight schools participated in the drawing and speech competitions and winners were honored.

This program was organized by the Department of Culture, Chandigarh Administration in collaboration of the Central Bank of India and Vardhaan Ayurvedic Herbal Medicine Pvt Ltd.
