8 signs that show you are overhydrated

CHANDIGARH

When a person drinks too much water, they may go through water poisoning, intoxication, or a disruption of brain function. It happens because our cells contain more than required water and end up swelling. Swelling in the brain creates pressure in the brain which leads to confusion, drowsiness, and headaches. If the pressure rises then it might lead to high blood pressure and low heart rate.

Sodium is the electrolyte most affected by overhydration. Sodium is a vital element that maintains the balance of fluids in and out of cells. When its levels get low due to a high amount of water in the body, fluids inside the cells end up putting a person into a coma, or even dying.

The signs that you’re drinking too much water:

Urine color changes: To determine whether you drink enough water is to check the color of your urine. Normal color is pale yellow and it shifts to tea-colored due to the combination of the pigment called urochrome and the water level in your body.

You pee often: Another symptom is if you’re relieving yourself more than normal. On average, you should urinate six to eight times a day and people who are habitual of caffeine or alcohol pee 10 times.

Vomiting: The signs of overhydration are the same as dehydration. When your body has too much water, the kidneys are unable to remove the excess liquid which leads to nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

Throbbing headaches: Excess water in the body causes the body’s salt levels to get low and the cells swell. This swelling causes a throbbing headache and may lead to brain impairment and breathing issues.

Swelling in hands, feet, and lips: When you’re overhydrated, you will see some swelling in your feet, hands, and lips as your cells swell due to the excess water in your body.

Muscles Cramp: Electrolyte levels shrink due to excess water in your body, the body balance goes down which causes muscle cramps.

Tiredness: Excess water drinking makes your kidneys work hard to remove the excess amount of water creates a hormone reaction that makes you feel stressed and tired and you are unable to get out of bed due to dizziness.

Drinking water even when you’re not thirsty: A way to avoid drinking excess water is to know when your body needs it. The body can fight against dehydration as thirst is the body’s response to dehydration.
