Children and Mobile Phones: Here’s why children should not be given mobile phones

In this high-tech era, electronic devices are part of our everyday life which provides multiple benefits to all. However, if mobile phones and computer screens are used in excess, it can prove to be a disadvantage for all. The most important point to keep in mind while using a phone is the distance, holding a cell phone a few inches away from our ear and the eyes as well reduces the risk a thousand times.

There are many risks to mental and physical well-being of children when they use mobile phones for long. The IQ will be lower, mental growth in children will be improper, sleep deprivation will be seen. Some other major side effects are brain tumours and psychiatric diseases.

Some negative effects of using mobile phone in excess in children are:

  • Brain Tumours: As there is no evidence that radiation causes tumours due to cell phone radiation, but as a parent, you should limit the time your kids use phones to avoid any other possible risks in future.
  • Exposure to bad content: Content viewed on the mobile phone and the time spent on the screen affects the brain should be controlled by the parents. Therefore, it is the parents responsibility to check that their children are watching certain programs, games, etc. that are suitable for their age group.
  • Lack of education: Children fail to pay attention in the class, miss out important things, and consequently they become clueless about studies and examinations when they use mobile phones at an excessive rate.
  • Sleep deprived: Children use the internet all night for a period of time, causing restlessness and sleep deprivation. It also interrupts their academic life as they don’t wake up in the morning for school or they feel sleepy during their classes and are unable to concentrate on what is taught in school.
  • Outdoor activities ignored: When they start playing games on the phone in their daily routine then they don’t partake in physical activity and get fresh air. This led them to gain weight which can later develop into harmful diseases such as diabetes and hypertension.
  • Eyes: Proper concentrate on the screen affects the eyesight. At a young age children get spectacles due to their weak eyesight.

    Here are some tips on how you can control the mobile phone usage in children:

  • Avoid giving your child your cell phone when he is doing some kind of an activity as it will only distract him/her.
  • Even parents should take care of it, when they are sitting with family and children, the usage of mobile phones should be restricted. It will create a behaviour pattern in their family.
  • Keep your mobile phones safely with you and out of sight of your kids at night.
