Skin cancer: Symptoms, Types, and Diagnosis

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, of which skin cancer accounts for 1.20 million cases worldwide.

Skin cancer is an abnormal growth of skin cells,  most commonly on sun-exposed skin, according to the Mayo Clinic. However, it can also develop in areas of the body that are not regularly exposed to the sun.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology  (AADA), skin cancer can appear on the body in different ways. Some telltale signs may be:
– Mole changes or  looks different from  others
– Grows out
– Scales
– Sores that don’t heal or sores that heal and reappear
– Sugar brown or black  under the bee

In order to diagnose skin cancer, you must see your doctor for a thorough examination. Your doctor may examine your skin, look for noticeable skin changes associated with skin cancer, and may recommend additional tests.

They may take a small suspicious area of ​​skin for testing as a sample. Also known as a biopsy, it can determine what type of skin cancer you have and how serious it is.
Most skin cancers are preventable. Here are some ways to protect yourself:
– Avoid midday sun
– Wear protective clothing
– Wear sunscreen  year-round
– Evaluate your skin regularly and report any changes
– Avoid medications that make the skin more sensitive

There are three main types of skin cancer. These include:
Basal cell carcinoma: Basal cell carcinoma is a type of skin cancer that usually occurs in white people. It appears as a slightly transparent bump on the skin and on sun-exposed areas such as the head and neck.
Squamous cell carcinoma: Squamous cell carcinoma develops in the squamous cells that make up the middle and outer layers of the skin, according to the experts. This type of skin cancer is characterized by a hard red bump, scaly patch, or sore that heals and reopens.
Melanoma: Melanoma is the most severe type of skin cancer, developing in melanocytes, the cells that make the pigment melanin. It can develop into a mole or suddenly appear as a dark patch on your skin.
