Dr. Shivaji Pandey discussed how verbal knowledge happens as per Sanskrit poetics

A special lecture on Sanskrit poetics was organised by Panjab University’s Sanskrit department today. The title of the lecture was ‘the concept of verbal understanding in Sanskrit poetics’, where the speaker was Dr. Shivaji Pandey, Assistant Professor (Guest) at PU’s Sanskrit department. In his inaugural speech, Mr. Vijay Bharadwaj, Assistant Professor (Guest), introduced the topic of the lecture and its importance to Sanskrit students. Dr. Shivaji Pandey introduced the audience with the basic concepts behind verbal knowledge in general as well as in the context of Sanskrit poetics. “Kavya or poetics has its origin in the Vedas and became majorly developed during the period of Natyashastra of Bharatamuni”, said Dr. Pandey. He explained how the various Sanskrit scholars of the past thought variously about the important elements as well as the processes behind verbal knowledge. Dr. Pandey based his lecture on primary Sanskrit texts on poetics or Kavyashastra. Prof. V. K. Alankar, academic incharge of PU’s Sanskrit department said in his concluding remarks, “the topic of verbal knowledge is very vast and I hope students present here have learned about it from the perspective of Sanskrit poetics.” Prof. Alankar added that many Hindi songs can be analysed from the perspective of Sanskrit poetics. The lecture was followed by a question and answer session. Faculty, Research scholars and students of PU’s Sanskrit and Hindi departments attended the lecture.
