CHANDIGARH

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) affects almost 27 percentile of women in their childbearing years or women from 18-44 year of age. In this ailment, cysts in the ovaries are made, high levels of male hormones occur and even they face irregular periods.

What causes PCOS?

PCOS mainly comes from the genes, insulin resistance, and inflammation also linked to excess androgen production.

  • INSULIN RESISTANCE: Insulin is a hormone the pancreas produces to help the body use sugar from foods for energy. When cells are unable to use insulin properly, the body’s demand for insulin increases and then the pancreas makes more insulin to compensate. Extra insulin triggers the ovaries to produce more male hormones which trigger this disease.
  • INFLAMMATION: Women with PCOS often have increased levels of inflammation in their body. Being overweight can also be the reason for inflammation.

Symptoms of PCOS:

Some women feel the symptoms at their first period but some get to know that they have PCOS after they gain a lot of weight or when women face difficulty in conceiving a baby. The most common PCOS symptoms according to the news sources are:

  • Irregularity of period: A lack of ovulation prevents the uterine lining from shedding every month. Some women with PCOS get fewer bleeding flow than eight periods a year or none at all from women’s health sources.
  • Heavy bleedingThe uterine lining builds up for a longer period of time, so the periods you do get can be heavier than normal. It can be painful also.
  • Unnecessary Hair growthAbove 70 per cent of women with this condition face the growth of hair on their face and body including on their back, belly, and chest. Hirsutism is called for excessive hair growth.
  • Acne scars: Change in hormones can create oily skin than usual and this can cause breakouts on some areas like the face, chest, and upper back.
  • Gain weight: Around 80 per cent of women with PCOS gain weight o you can say are overweight
  • Risk of baldness: Hair on the scalp gets thinner and may fall out.
  • Darkening of the skin: Dark patches or spots on skin can form in body creases like those on the neck, in the groin, and even under the breasts.
  • Headaches: Many of them face pain in their head due to the irregularity of hormonal changes.

Effects of PCOS on health:

When hormonal changes occur in a woman’s body in a wide range, it impacts on various things including lifestyle changes. It increases the risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes when going through PCOS. Women face various problems from which one is unable to sleep properly at night.
