To evaluate the first hand information of election preparedness, District Election Officer-cum- Deputy Commissioner Ms. Isha Kalia today visited Election Commission’s warehouse at phase 7, where the Electronic Voting Machines have been kept. She also reviewed the election preparedness in the wake of upcoming assembly elections.

On this occasion, Deputy Commissioner Ms. Kalia apprised that besides those EVMs and VVPATs that were available in the district, a total of 1284 control units, 1769 Ballot Units and 1383 VVPATs were available with the district and First Level Checking (FLC) of these apparatus to be started from September 30 to ensure seamless functioning of these units during the voting. She informed that all the apparatus that are to be used for the election would undergo the mandatory checking.
Instructing the officials to make all arrangements well before time, the District Election Officer said that Ballot papers and old tags from the ballot units would be removed. Similarly, the candidates and the polled votes from the control units would be erased and brought to zero. The officials would also check the functioning of the units. The functioning of VVPATs would be checked by conducting mock polling.
Ms. Kalia said that the first-level checking is being undertaken in advance so that all checks were carried out without any undue haste in the presence of representatives of political parties. This has to be completed before the finalisation of the list of contesting candidates. The three assembly constituencies of the district have total 902 polling booths. However, the number of polling booths is tentative as the Election Commission has yet to approve the same.
Meanwhile First Level Checking (FLC) of electronic voting machines (EVMs) and voter verifiable paper audit trails (VVPATs) that are to be used for the ensuing Assembly elections also begin from September 30 in the presence of representatives of recognized political parties.
Among others who were present on the occasion included Additional Deputy Commissioner (G) Ms. Komal Mittal, Sub Divisional Magistrate Mohali Mr. Harbans Singh and Tehsildar (Elections) Mr. Sanjay Kumar were present.
