Dengue: Symptoms, warning signs, home remedies

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), an estimated 100-400 million people get infected by dengue, every year, globally, with many of them succumbing to the disease.

Most people get mild or no symptoms of dengue as there is a ratio of 1:4 of infected people who fall sick. Mild symptoms include—fever, cold, cough, body ache, restlessness or flu-like illness while most people recovers in about one week.

As monsoon has already hit the region, cases of dengue fever, an illness caused by a viral infection transmitted by the Aedes mosquito, have started creeping up. The disease currently has no cure.

Health experts fear that the combination of dengue with Covid-19 can enhance the severity of both the diseases as there is no specific antiviral drug or vaccine for both and the treatment mostly depends on only clinical conditions and symptoms.

In this weather conditions, try to wear long sleeved shirts and long bottoms to prevent the mosquitoes bites. Using the insect repellent creams, twice a day, can also be helpful.

Here are some common and uncommon symptoms of dengue:

  • Headache
  • Eye pain (mostly behind the eyes)
  • Muscle, joint, or bone pain or full body ache
  • Rashes on skin
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Unusual bleeding from either nose or gums
  • Red spots under the skin in very small size, or unusual bruising
  • Fever

Moreover, severe dengue infection can lead to risk of life. There are some warning signs that indicate that your infection is increasing and there is an immediate need of consulting a doctor:

Warning signs: Watch for signs and symptoms of severe dengue to develop 24-48 hours after fever goes away. Some of them are:

  • Stomach or belly pain, tenderness
  • Vomiting at least 3 times in at least 24-28 hours
  • Runny and high bleeding from the nose or gums
  • Vomiting blood, or blood in the stool
  • Feeling tired, restless, or irritable or unable to get from bed

Here are some food ingredients which can be consumed for preventing severe dengue infection:

  • Citrus fruits: Eat oranges or drink orange juice two times a day for better health results. Lemon squeezed in water is also treated as an antioxidant property which kills the bacteria.
  • Yogurt: Eat a bowl of yogurt for lunch. It has nutrition which gives you good health and calcium.
  • Spinach: Green leafy vegetables are good for health and it keeps you fit. One’s weight loss should eat these veggies as they contain less fat but provide nutrition, minerals to the body.
  • Plenty of fluids: Drink plenty of fluids such as, fresh fruit juice, water, and vegetable juice for energy.
  • Ginger and Garlic: Ginger and garlic kill the bacteria and help you to fight against the health problems. Add ginger and garlic to your meal or have a cup of ginger tea.
  • Almonds: Eat a handful of almonds while walking here or there. It promotes the growth of the brain and upturns your memory.
