10 common causes of rectal bleeding

CHANDIGARH

Rectal bleeding occurs when blood oozes from the anus or rectum while passing stools. Bleeding in the rectum or anus is indicated by a bright red colour. Darker blood indicates bleeding in the small bowel or upper intestine. Bleeding in the stomach or other digestive organs is frequently linked with very dark or blackish blood.

There are numerous reasons for this and following are the most typical causes:

1. Hemorrhoids or piles: Small haemorrhoids are usually painless. Bleeding while passing stools is the most prevalent symptom. The blood may leave a stain on the toilet bowl or on the toilet paper. Larger haemorrhoids can cause mucus production, pain, inflammation, and itchiness. Hemorrhoids are swellings in the area of the anus and the bottom part of the intestine.

2. Anal fissure: This is a small skin tear near the anal border. It’s a debilitating condition. An anal fissure will frequently bleed a bit. The blood is generally bright red and stains the toilet paper, but it disappears quickly.

3. Stomach and duodenal ulcers: A stomach or duodenal ulcer can result in bleeding. This may result in rectal bleeding. It’s possible that the stool will turn black or plum in colour.

4. Infections: Infections of the stomach and intestine are one of the reasons for rectal bleeding. Watery stools and gut edema are possible symptoms.

5. Diverticula: A diverticulum can bleed from time to time, and patients may pass blood through the anus. Bleeding is usually painless and quick. It is caused by a burst blood artery in the wall of a diverticulum, and the amount of blood loss can be significant.

6. Polyps: A bowel polyp is a noncancerous growth that can appear on the inside lining of the intestine or rectum. They are frequent in the elderly. A polyp may bleed, and in rare cases, a polyp may become malignant.

7. Cancer of the intestine and rectum: Cancer of the intestine and rectum can affect both older and younger people. One symptom that can arise is rectal bleeding. Weight loss, diarrhoea, or constipation are all common symptoms that occur before noticeable bleeding. Rectal bleeding can be caused by cancers of other portions of the gut that are further up in the digestive tract than the colon, but this is unusual.

8. Angiodysplasia: This is a condition in which the inner lining of the colon develops numerous enlarged blood vessels. The right side of the intestine is the most common site of angiodysplasia. Although the aetiology is uncertain, they are more common in the elderly. The majority of the time, bleeding is painless.

9. Gut development abnormalities: Various abnormalities of the gut or gut wall in young children can cause rectal bleeding.

10. Intussusception: When one part of the gut is sucked into another, it causes a blockage. Hirschsprung’s disease is a condition in which a portion of the lower intestine does not work as it should. The intestinal wall muscles are unable to crush the stool as tightly as they should
