National Deworming Day is annually observed on February 10 in India with the objective of deworming all children aged 1 to 19. This initiative aims to counteract worm infections, which can adversely affect nutrient absorption in children, leading to issues such as anemia, malnourishment, and hindered mental and physical development. The Government of India administers deworming tablets through Anganwadi centers and schools across all states and union territories.
Deworming involves the use of medication to eliminate parasites or intestinal worms from a child’s body. Neglecting to provide deworming tablets to children may result in soil-transmitted helminths, a condition characterized by a buildup of worms affecting the human body. Worm infestation poses a widespread health risk, significantly impacting infant mortality rates.
To prevent worm infestation in children, several measures can be taken:
- Ensure that children wash their hands before meals, and parents should thoroughly wash all fruits and vegetables before cooking.
- Use filtered water for drinking and other purposes.
- Keep the child’s fingernails trimmed and clean.
- Encourage children to use hand wash before and after using the bathroom.
- Discourage unhygienic habits such as finger-sucking, nail-biting, or scratching the buttocks.
- Always ensure that the child’s food is covered.
