Can drinking excess water cause health problems?

Many health experts have recommended that how much water should humans drink per day but the need of water for individuals depends on various factors, including health, your city, whether you are active or couch potato. In the recommendations, experts found that no single formula fits on everyone.
Studies suggest that to make an estimate of how many fluids your body needs, you have to know more about your health and body requirements which will give you a result.
If you want your body to work properly then consume water and other food and beverages which contain water.
The U.S. National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine determined that an adequate daily fluid intake is:
- About 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) of fluids a day for men
- About 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) of fluids a day for women
They say that the upper mentioned recommendations include water, other beverages and food. Even in our daily routine about 20% of fluid is consumed which usually comes from the food and drinks.
Is 8 glasses of water in a day enough?
As we said earlier, water requirements vary from person to person, so eight glasses of water may be enough for some people and even the fewer than eight glasses might be enough for some.
Is excess water harmful for the body?
Yes, of course, everything in excess causes trouble likewise when you drink too much water then it affects the kidneys. They are unable to get rid of the excess water. Experts say that the sodium content of your blood becomes diluted. This is called hyponatremia and it can be life-threatening.
This further leads to vomiting, diarrhoea, nausea, headaches, anxiety, and feel like bloated stomach all day.
The Institute of Medicine recommends that a healthy adult should drink about 9–13 cups of fluids per day, on average.
Point to remember that water requirement vary with sex, age, weather, activity level, and overall health. Some situations such as extreme heat, and illness with fever will require more fluid intake than normal routine.
What about other food items containing water?
Yes, you don’t have to rely upon water to stay hydrated. Other food items containing water such as watermelon, spinach are almost 100% water by weight and good for health care. In addition, beverages such as juice, herbal tea, and milk are composed of water, but this regular soda, energy drinks, and other sweet drinks usually contain excess sugar, which may add more calories than needed in your body.
