Committed to provide clean and green atmosphere to the people of Barnala, on occasion of Gandhi Jayanti today the district administration today started fortnight cleanliness drive, distributed paper bags to stop usage of plastic bags and planted saplings.
Starting the Swachhta Fortnight of municipal council Barnala from Handiaya Chowk, the Deputy Commissioner Mr Tej Pratap Singh Phoolka said that keeping our surroundings clean was the best tribute to Mahatama Gandhi. ADC (G) Mr Aditya Dechalwal, SDM Mr Varjeet Walia and EO Mr Manpreet Singh Sidhu were also present at the launch of drive.
Starting the drive to stop usage of plastic bags, Deputy Commissioner distributed newspaper made bags that were made from newspapers provided from DC’s house and were made by Self Help Groups (SHGs). He also called upon people to completely shun the usage of plastic bags. The paper bags were distributed to shopkeepers and rehri walas free of cost so that they should not sell products packed in plastic bags.
He also started the plantation drive by planting a sapling at the park near Handiaya Chowk. He added that lakhs of saplings were being planted to make district green and a mini jungle was being developed at the Moga bypass.
Deputy Commissioner Mr Phoolka started the paper bags distribution in 22 acres area by distributing these to rehri walas. He motivated shopkeepers not to use plastic, keep their surroundings clean and follow all the Covid 19 safety protocols. Municipal Council beautifies Namdev Marg
DC also appreciated the efforts of SDM Varjeet Walia and EO Manpreet Singh Sidhu in beautifying the Namdev Marg. On the road, the tree guards have been painted on both sides of road. SDM Mr Varjeet Walia said that the municipal council has got tree guards prepared from self help groups. 25 each have been installed in Barnala, Bhadaur and Tapa. More such tree guards will be installed.
