GUM CANCER: Symptoms, Causes and Treatment

CHANDIGARH

A person gets confused between oral and gum cancer as the symptoms are relatable.

One starts to question if cancer is present when their gums start to swell and turn red, or when they suddenly develop a growth where there is no history. Gum disease, often known as gum cancer, can manifest as inexplicable bleeding and discomfort in the gums caused by loosening of the teeth or weakening of the gums.

However, people also misunderstand the terms gingivitis and gum cancer but in reality, they are 2 separate conditions that both require significant consideration and professional consultation. Gum cancer is frequently confused with gingivitis because it is a condition brought on by plaque build-up.

Oral cancer and cancer connected to the gums are most common in those who regularly smoke cigarettes, cigars, pipes, or chew tobacco that includes gutkha, hookah, or shush.

Treatment

In addition to taking the patient’s overall health and age into account, the healthcare professional also takes into account the type of cancer, its stage, and if it has progressed from the initial location to other regions of the mouth and throat or the body. Depending on the nature of cancer, several types of treatment, including surgery, radiation treatment, and medication, are used.

The higher the likelihood of survival following treatment, the easier the procedure, and the greater function, and cosmesis after therapy. Therefore, it is crucial to maintain a healthier, moist mouth, clean teeth, and healthy gums at all times. Gum cancer is largely treatable, providing it is detected early.
