District Administration Mohali today organised Gender Sensitization workshop for boys in 2 schools of Mohali district namely Government Smart School Lalru Mandi, and Government smart school Singpura. These workshops were conducted by a Pune based organisation (Equal Community foundation).

Most of the programmes of gender equality are generally conducted for women, while boys continue to be socialized into patriarchal gender norms. Schools are important spaces where gender stereotypes get created, hence in order to break down the same, and to ensure that both boys and girls are provided with trainings for nurturing gender sensitivity at the preliminary stage of their cognitive development, a programme was conceptualised by Ms. Komal Mittal, IAS (Additional Deputy Commissioner General) and Ms. Priya Singh (District Development Fellow) in consultation with the Deputy Commissioner of SAS Nagar, Ms. Isha Kalia, IAS.

The pilot was done in 2 schools, and based upon the feedback it will be implemented in other schools as well.
In the next phase menstrual hygiene and gender sensitization workshops will be conducted for girls of the same schools where pilot for boys was done.
Ms. Kalia informed that, in order to achieve gender equality in education, opportunities for and equality of access to education should be made available to girls and boys in their physical space, socialization space and learning space. With this aim, good reading material along with workshops, and a gender sensitive infrastructure is planned.
For now workshops for boys have been held, in the second week of November similar workshops will be conducted for girls as well. The schools will also be equipped with the literature on gender awareness including Menstrupedia Comics.
