As part of Clean India 2.0 programme, the NSS units of Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women, Chandigarh, in collaboration with the college’s Eco Club Parivesh, organised two plastic collection drives in the adopted village Badheri, Chandigarh. The aim of these drives was to spread awareness about the harmful effects of single-use plastic. The event was graced by the presence of Mr. Hardeep Singh Butrela, Councillor, Badheri. During the drives, the NSS volunteers sensitised residents about the harmful effects of single-use plastic via a rally wherein they raised slogans like ‘hariyali ko badhana hai, plastic ko hatana hai’, ‘hum sab ka hai ek hi nara, plastic mukt ho desh hamara’. They also apprised the shopkeepers and residents about Clean India 2.0 programme and urged them to stop the usage of plastic especially single-use plastic in their daily lives. The NSS volunteers visited every nook and corner of the locality during both the drives and collected more than 41 kg of plastic waste material that included plastic bottles, single use wrappers, plastic spoons, disposable cups and plates. The waste this collected was handed over to the officials from Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh for proper disposal.
Principal Dr. Nisha Bhargava expressed appreciation for the efforts of the NSS units for raising awareness about the menace of single-use plastic, which poses a major threat to environmental as well as human health. She impressed upon prioritising reusable products for fighting this menace and preserving our environment.
