” India is a diverse, multi-religious country where a large number of different communities live together.  Minorities in India should be treated with equality and harmony and the administrative authorities should take immediate action to stop any kind of discrimination or oppression against minorities on the basis of colour, race, religion and caste. Under Indian constitutional framework here is no scope of any discrimination against minorities. “
This statement was made by Mr. Iqbal Singh Lalpura, Chairman National Minorities Commission while addressing a press meet at NIPER Institute during his visit to District Mohali.  He said that the National Minorities Commission was taking action to implement the 15 point program formulated by the Government of India whose main agenda was to implement the schemes being formulated for the welfare of the minorities living in India.  He said that the National Minorities Commission was mainly working for the welfare of 6 minorities including Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists and Parsis.
Elaborating on the programs being run by the commission, he said that financial assistance was being provided by the commission to the students belonging to minorities for their education from primary class to PhD.  In addition, if a minority child has passed the preliminarily test of the IAS exam, he / she also gets financial help for the traning of main exam and interview which is non-refundable.  He said that after admission the students going for study abroad would be given a loan of up to Rs. 15 lakhs for further studies at 6% annual interest.
Mr. Lalpura said that a loan of up to Rs. 20 lakhs is given to the unemployed youth of minorities to start their own business at 6% interest and if the loan is to be taken by a woman then the interest rate is 4% per annum.  He said that a maximum loan of Rs. 30 lakh would be provided at 8% interest rate for setting up one’s own business.
Before addressing the press conference, Mr. Lalpura held a meeting with the senior administration and police officials of the district and reviewed the progress of the development schemes being implemented for the welfare of the minorities.  He directed the officers to take immediate action in case of any incident of communal disturbance so that communal harmony of the society could be maintained.  Mr. Lalpura expressed satisfaction over the working of SAS Nagar administration.
Prominent amongst those present in the meeting included Mr. Amit Talwar Deputy Commissioner SAS Nagar, Mr. Ravinderpal Singh SP Headquarters, Mr. Harbans Singh SDM Mohali, Mr. Abikesh Gupta SDM Kharar, Mrs. Swati Tiwana SDM Dera Bassi besides other officers of the district.
