Oral hygiene camp, webinar on cancer and session on OTC drugs mark Women’s Day celebrations at MCM

The NSS units, Medical Committee and Women Development Cell of Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women, Chandigarh marked the celebration of International Women’s Day with two separate events. The NSS units, in collaboration with Medical Committee of the college, organised an Oral Hygiene Camp in the adopted village Badheri as a part of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’. During the camp, dentist Dr Anupam Uppal, shed limelight on the importance of oral health and explained several oral hygiene practices one should adopt in one’s daily routine. In this camp, more than 50 women and girl residents of Badheri were examined by Dr Uppal for their oral hygiene. Further, the NSS units and Medical Committee, in collaboration with Chandigarh Cancer and Diagnostic Center (CCDC), organised a webinar on “Cancer: An Overview” by Dr Jatin Sarin, Head Medical Oncologist, CCDC. During the session, Dr Sarin provided a detailed insight on cancer while explaining its types, causes, symptoms of different types of cancer such as breast cancer, cervical cancer, ovarian cancer and leukemia. He also highlighted the importance of periodic screening and diagnosis of the disease for timely treatment and apprised the audience about the available techniques. In another event, the Women Development Cell of the college organised an online awareness session on “Over the Counter Drug Consumption in India with special reference to Women”. The resource person for this enlightening session was lead clinical scientist Dr Praveen Kumar who gave an exhaustive presentation on the pros and cons associated with the use of over the counter drugs. Delving into the common health problems faced by women like hair fall, vulvovaginal atrophy, over active bladder, vulvar and vaginal candidiasis, heart burns and sleeplessness, Dr Kumar apprised the participants about the corresponding OTC drugs. Dr Kumar cautioned the participants of the disastrous aftermath associated with irrational self-diagnosis and called for patient awareness programmes to sensitise people about judicious use of over the counter drugs.
Principal Dr. Nisha Bhargava appreciated the efforts of the NSS units, Medical Committee and Women Development Cell to celebrate International Women’s Day in a befitting manner through thoughtfully planned activities. She added that though women have come a long way, still much needs to be done for ensuring an equitable and just society that treats women as equal members of the society.
