The World Health Organization and the International Labour Organization have stated to opt for measures to be put in place to safeguard workers ‘ health while teleworking.

A new technical brief to healthy and safe working from home, published by the two UN agencies, emphasises the pros of health and risks of teleworking. They also stated the changes required to accommodate the shift brought on by the COVID – 19 pandemic and the digital transformation of work.

There are numerous benefits of teleworking:

  • An improved work-life balance,
  • Opportunities for flexible working hours
  • More physical activity,
  • No traffic issue,
  • More time spent on commuting,
  • Decrease in air pollution,
  • Balanced physical and mental health,
  • Higher productivity,
  • Operational costs reduced,
  • Cut off on luxury costs,

However, the report clarifies that to operate the business through work from home then one needs a perfect plan layout and health and safety support.

The effect of teleworking on the physical and mental health and social wellbeing of workers is equally important.  One has to take negative sides of the working such as;

  • Isolation feel,
  • Burnout,
  • Depression,
  • Home violence,
  • Musculoskeletal
  • Eye strain,
  • A habit of smoking and increase of alcohol consumption,
  • Sitting for long hours and screen time increased
  • Ultimatum unhealthy weight gain.

The research emphasized the roles that governments, employers, workers and health services at workplaces should play in enhancing and safeguarding their health while teleworking.

Covid-19 pandemic has a surge of teleworking, firmly changing the nature of work practically overnight for many workers, said Director, Department of Environment, Climate Change and Health, World Health Organization. Around two years after the start of the pandemic, it proved very clear that the outcomes of teleworking can be positive. The thing to be kept in mind should be whether the policies benefit both workers and the work.

To ease the job, the organization should set up all the necessary equipment in place to ensure that workers complete the tasks of the job; provide adequate information, guidelines and training to ease down the psychosocial and mental health impact of teleworking.
