PU Scientist’s novel research work invites presentations at76th Annual Conference of American Academy of Forensic Sciences in Denver (USA)

Chandigarh February 16, 2024

The use of novel scientific techniques of stable isotope analysis and molecular scrutinization of dental calculus deposits applied for identification of unknown human remains by Dr. JS Sehrawat, Assistant Professor, Department of Anthropology, Panjab University, Chandigarh, has attracted the attention and recognition of internationally reputed American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS) for its presentations at 76th Annual Scientific Conference of the academy to be held at Colorado Convention Centre, Denver (USA) from 19th to 24th February, 2024.Dr. Sehrawat will explain the significance of oxygen, strontium, carbon and nitrogen stable isotope analysis for estimating geolocality and food consumption behaviour of the victims of Ajnala skeletal remains. He will also discuss humanitarian forensic challenges faced in identification and repatriation of Ajnala skeletal remains. He will elaborate how the yellowish crusty deposition on human teeth can used for identification of the host as well as the microbiome in oral cavity of the host, from ancient DNA extraction/sequencing and isotopic analyses from the calculus deposits. Dr. Sehrawat lab is also preparing database of facial features and facial soft-tissue thickness estimated from CBCT scans of northwest Indians for developing artificial intelligence (AI) based automated facial recognition systems. So, he will also present a paper about the applicability and significance of AI based automatic forensic facial recognitions recently introduced by global authorities for seeking entry to high security areas like nuclear reactors, parliaments and airports without passport or any other identity document. Besides his Six single/first author presentations, he will also participate in various discussions, case presentations and managerial tasks ascribed to him at the AAFS conference being a member of the academy since last many years. His research scholars work has also been accepted for presentations in the conference and one of the is also accompanying him to Denver.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), New Delhi, has approved to fund Dr. Sehrawat’ s international travel airfare, keeping in view of merits of his research work being presented at 76th Annual Scientific Conference of American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS) to be held in Denver (USA).

Dr. Sehrawat is the permanent Member of the academy since last many years and obtaining permanent membership process of this academy is a very tough scrutiny process. He is the first or single author in all of his accepted presentations; also he is one of the authors in other six accepted papers being presented by his PhD research scholars. Dr. Sehrawat claimed a significant achievement to his credit that he got an opportunity to present six research papers at AAFS Annual Scientific Meeting of Academy of Forensic Sciences where thousands of delegates from different countries will participate and deliberate their research. He will explore some scientific collaborations and networkings with the researchers from global universities and research institutions to boost up his future academic and research accomplishments. Earlier, Dr. Sehrawat has presented his research papers in England, New Orleans, Seattle, Baltimore, Orlando, Toronto, Portugal, etc. Dr. Sehrawat has published more than 105 quality research papers in the international and national journals of repute in the field of forensic sciences.
