Secretary, Tourism chairs meeting regarding development of water sports at NHPC Dam, Sartse village

Kargil, Dec 14, 2022: Secretary, Tourism and Culture, UT Ladakh Kacho Mehboob Ali Khan on Monday chaired a meeting at Kargil Development Authority (KDA) Office regarding development of water sports at NHPC Dam, Sartse village.
Deputy Commissioner/CEO, LAHDC, Kargil, Santosh Sukhadeve; Superintending Engineer PWD, Abdul Mutalib; Assistant Director (Tourism), Aga Syed Toha; DGM, NHPC and Officers of NHPC, Kargil, besides other concerned officers were present during the meeting.
Detailed discussion was held on various aspects and feasibility of development of water sports at the NHPC Dam at Sartse village.
The DGM, NHPC informed that the total feasible length available from the barrage to the foot bridge is 2.5 km. He also said that during summer the waterflow rises in the river and the barrage gates are frequently operated to maintain the flow of water to the penstock and hence the risk factor is high and it is not advisable to have water sports activities in the dam.
Secretary, Tourism and DC, Kargil pointed out that considering the safety of the users (tourists/visitors), it will be feasible and safe that water sports activities can be undertaken during March-April and October-November when the water level is not too high and predictable.
Further, it was pointed out that a foot bridge over the dam can be built to make the other side of the lake accessible for tourists/visitors. The Secretary has asked DC, Kargil and AD, Tourism/KDA officers to follow up so that the project is conceived and finalised at the earliest.
The Secretary, Tourism conveyed to the DGM, NHPC to submit a detailed technical report for the development of water sports taking into consideration feasibility and risk factors within a month for further consideration. Other issues like funding, development and operation related issues were also discussed and concrete mechanism will be put in place once NHPC submits the report.
