Diarrhoea disease ranks as the third leading cause of death among children under five, claiming approximately 443,832 young lives globally each year, despite being both preventable and treatable. The illness can persist for several days, depleting the body of essential water and salts needed for survival.
In India, diarrhoea diseases remain a significant threat to children under five, accounting for 5.8% of deaths in this age group, as per the 2017-19 Cause of Death Statistics from the Sample Registration System of the Registrar General of India. Annually, around 50,000 children in the country succumb to diarrhoea.
Infection rates rise in areas lacking adequate sanitation, hygiene, and safe drinking water. Rotavirus and E. coli are the most prevalent pathogens affecting children of all ages, with malnutrition further increasing susceptibility to diarrhoea. Additional causes include unhygienic food storage and unsafe domestic water handling.
Preventive Measures:
- Ensure access to safe drinking water by boiling, using filters, or adding chlorine, especially during monsoons.
- Maintain clean and functional toilets.
- Practice regular hand washing with soap and water.
- Exclusively breastfeed for the first six months of a baby’s life.
- Uphold good personal and food hygiene.
- Administer three doses of the Rotavirus vaccine.
Treatment Steps:
- Stay hydrated by drinking Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS) and plenty of fluids.
- Take zinc supplements.
- Consume nutrient-rich food.
- Rest and avoid strenuous activities.
- Consult a doctor before taking any over-the-counter medications if symptoms persist or worsen.
