If your kidneys are not functioning properly, your body cannot accumulate waste products and water. Over time, it can cause heart, bone, and other health problems. The main goal of a kidney-friendly diet is to limit the amount of certain minerals and liquids you eat and drink which are not beneficial for your body.
1. Gourds
There are several varieties of gourds such as bottle gourd, ridge gourd, striped gourd, bitter gourd, etc. They are low in sodium and contain less potassium content. Hence, they are helpful for people with kidney ailments.
You can make either vegetable sabzi with rice or roti, or you can cook them with rice. You may also make a stuffing parathas.
2. Paprika
All paprikas, red, green and yellow, are useful for people battling with kidney diseases. They contain phytochemicals and antioxidants that lessen inflammation in the body. This vegetable contains less amount of potassium, sodium and liquid. Therefore, it reduces the strain on the kidneys and further repairs and regenerates nephrotic cells.
3 Carbohydrate Foods
You need to raise your carbohydrate intake to meet your body’s energy needs.The refined carbohydrate form is helpful to all patients.
4. Allium species
Eating this vegetable increases the angiotensin receptors in the body. This increase in angiotensin receptors lowers the progression of chronic kidney disease. For kidney patients you need to leach all vegetables which refers to cooking the vegetables in boiling water for 2-3 minutes and then immediately transferring them to a bowl of cold water.
5. Dairy Products
Milk and dairy products are good sources of protein. However, in kidney disease, you have to limit the protein intake.
Food to Avoid in Kidney Disease:
Dietary limitations in kidney disease are primarily dependent on the severity of the disease. However, the three kinds of foods that you should avoid are:
1. Phosphorus Rich Foods
However, excess intake of phosphorus in your blood makes your bones weaker and can break easily. So doctors advised kidney patients to limit phosphorus intake.
Food sources that need to be avoided are:
- Whole grain bread
- Cereal and oatmeal
- Nuts and sunflower seeds
2. Potassium-rich foods
When we talk about potassium then too much of potassium intake can cause harm to your body. They can increase muscle cramps, heart rate problems, and weakness.
Avoid high potassium foods including:
Avocado, banana, melon, orange, raisins, spinach, potatoes, tomatoes, beans brown rice etc
Switch to low-potassium foods such as Apples, cranberries, grapes, pineapples, strawberries, cauliflower, onions, peppers etc.
3. Fluids
People suffering from kidney disease should reduce your fluid intake as follows: No excess water is removed from the damaged kidney. In addition, excess water in the body can cause harm as it can raise high blood pressure, swelling, and even heart failure. Excessive water can also build up in the lungs which causes breathing difficulty.
