When we grow up, we tend to forget most of our childhood. No matter how hard we try to recall things, we can barely remember anything. We don’t like this as most of our habits and behaviour is shaped during this period. Here is why we cannot remember anything from our childhood-
1.We All Suffer From Childhood Amnesia- Childhood amnesia is the inability of adults to recall the events that occurred in their life before the age of four. Kids who are 7 years old cab retain 60% of their childhood. This starts decreasing as we grow up. A child of 8 to 9 years can retain only 40% of their childhood. Thus, we tend to forget the previous stages of our development as we grow up.
2.Memories And Words Are Interrelated- We tend to forget because when we try to recall a memory, we try to define it using words. When we are small, our vocabulary is barely developed and thus, we cannot define how we actually feel. Thus, due to lack of words at an early age, we cannot recall anything from our childhood.
3.Brain Development- Our brain development can play a major role in our memory. As kids, our long term memory is not too good and we tend to forget things in the long run. The short term memory is also bad as we cannot recall events throughout the day. This is because our brain it at a developmental stage and new brain cells are still forming. Thus, no memory is stored properly in this time.
Thus, this is the reason why people tend to forget everything from their childhood. However, we can recall certain things with the help of our parents though they can be altered.
