The importance of physical activity in cancer prevention cannot be overstated, given the startling 14,61,427 new instances of cancer that are expected to be reported in India in 2022. Including a variety of workouts can be an effective way to lower the risk of cancer. When combined, these workouts can prevent cancer by enhancing immune system performance, controlling inflammation, and preserving a healthy body weight. Consult a healthcare provider before beginning any exercise program, especially if you have any pre-existing medical conditions.
There are four types of exercise that lower the risk of cancer:
Walking at a brisk pace: This easy-to-do but very effective aerobic exercise causes a slow increase in speed, which raises heart rate and breathing.
Cycling: Provides an excellent cardiovascular workout whether done outdoors or on a stationary cycle. It works best when done at a moderate to high intensity, with multiple sessions each week lasting between 20 and 30 minutes.
Strength training exercises: Exercises that strengthen the musculoskeletal system, such as bodyweight squats and push-ups, complement aerobic activities. Bodyweight squats involve a deliberate descent into a seated position and an ascent back to standing, whereas push-ups work the arms, shoulders, and chest when performed from a plank position.
Yoga: Known as a comprehensive discipline, yoga offers transforming postures including child’s pose and downward dog. The latter promotes flexibility and relaxation, while the former stretches and strengthens while encouraging focused breathing.
