HAVE BEEN RUNNING FISH POND CONSTRUCTED IN POULTRY FARM FOR THE PAST 10 YEARS

Progressive farmer brothers from village Alkara are scripting a Piscean success story by successfully running fish pond constructed in a poultry farm and making a handsome earning of Rs 10 lacs per annum.Associated with fish farming for the past 25 years, farmers Manjit Singh and Chamkaur Singh have been using their poultry farm to propel the fish farming business making it an integrated business. 55 years old Manjit Singh said that he started fish farming around 25 years ago after getting training from Sangrur. He got pond dug in 2.5 acres of land and bought his first batch of fish seed from Sangrur government hatchery, village Benra. He gave fish feed as well as added nutrient supplement in the pond. Around 10 years ago, he erected pillars over the fish pond and started rearing hens. The excreta of these hens find their way into fish pond thereby serving as a feed for the fish. For the past ten years, he hasn’t added feed separately to his pond.

Manjit Singh added that there are around 1000 hens in the poultry and the excreta produced is enough to meet with the requirements of feed for fish in 2.5 acres of pond. Besides this, the organic water drained from pond finds its way to the fields nearby. The water from pond irrigates around 9 acres of agricultural land. The duo own around 18 acres of land and have taken another 50 acres on lease.They claimed that the 9 acres of fields getting water from fish pond have higher wheat and paddy yield per acre as compared to other piece of land.
Explaining the economics behind fish farming, they said that he bought fish feed at Rs 100 per thousand from Sangrur government fish farm. Every year he gets 70 to 80 quintals of yield and earns around Rs 8 lacs per annum. Besides this, they earn Rs 2 lacs per annum from sale of eggs and meat.
Fishery Officer Barnala Lavpreet Singh, who inspected the fish farm said, that to maintain oxygen content in ponds, farmer Manjit Singh runs aerator machines for around an hour every morning.

Deputy Commissioner Mrs Punamdeep Kaur appreciated the efforts of Alkara farmers in running the fish pond and poultry business as an integrated business. She said that both the farmers are examples for others to follow.
Youngsters called to take cue from farmers, Deputy Dir
Deputy Director fishery Mr Rakesh Kumar said that Manjit SIngh has been working well for the past many year in association with department. He said that new fish farmers should take cue from such experienced farmers and supplement their sources of income. He added that department gives free training every month and also gives subsidy through different schemes.
