Blood donation: Things to keep in mind before, during and after blood donation

Blood donation is a very noble cause which can help many people in surviving. Our society has given us many elements to lead a healthy and luxurious life so there is a responsibility of citizens to do something for society.

One unit of donated blood can save the lives of at least three people in need. However, according to some medical professionals, blood donation also provides health benefit to the donor.

Many people don’t know what to do before or after doing the blood donation.

Things to do before going for blood donation:

  • Intake of nutrition – Start taking nutrients 2 days before the blood donation to strengthen your immune system. Eat healthy diet, including fruits, green vegetables, eggs, milk etc.
  • Stay hydrated – Drink lots of liquid. You should preferable drink around 12 glasses of water daily.
  • Rest properly, don’t make yourself tired a night before the donation. Take ample rest to restore the energy.
  • Don’t take any antibiotics 2-3 days before the donation.
  • Don’t drink and smoke. If you are habitual of drinking on weekends or twice a week then before 2days of giving blood don’t drink and smoke.
  • Before you donate blood, consider increasing your intake of iron-rich foods. This can increase the iron stores in your body and reduce your risk for iron deficiency in the body.

 

While going for blood donation, keep below mentioned points in mind:

  • Drink water – Stay hydrated by having liquids.
  • Avoid fatty food – Don’t eat anything unhealthy in your breakfast or before donating blood.
  • Eat a healthy breakfast – Eat something nutritional for staying healthy and giving healthy blood to others.
  • Relax while donating – Don’t panic or feel stress while giving blood. Always set your mind free from disturbing thoughts.
  • Interact with others – Talk to others who have come to donate blood. Stay motivated and try to motivate others also.

After you donate blood you need to be careful about these things:

After you donate blood, you will be provided with a light snack and something to drink like juice or coconut water as it will stabilize your blood sugar and fluid levels. To replenish your fluids, drink an extra 4 cups of water over the next 24 hours.

Avoid exercise or heavy workout for a minimum of 1day and a maximum of 2 days. Doctors strictly prohibit taking alcohol for the next 24 hours for your health. After donating blood go and take the rest of one day and try to elevate negative thoughts from your mind.
