KARGIL, JUNE 05, 2021: Chairman and Chief Executive Councilor, LAHDC, Kargil Feroz Ahmed Khan today attended the virtual MoU signing ceremony for establishing 5 MW Solar Power Project at Zanskar Kargil.
In presence of the Lieutenant Governor (LG) Ladakh, Radha Krishna Mathur, Member Parliament Ladakh Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, Advisor to LG Ladakh Umang Narula and CEO, Convergence Energy Services Energy Limited (CESL) Mahua Acharya, the MoU was signed with CESL by the Secretary Power Ravinder Kumar on behalf of the UT Administration, Ladakh and Deputy Commissioner/CEO, LAHDC, Kargil Santosh Sukhadeve signed it on behalf of the LAHDC, Kargil.
Terming the establishment of the 5 MW Solar Power Project at Zanskar in future as yet another step towards the effective implementation of strategies for development of renewable energy in the realization of Carbon Neutral Ladakh, the CEC said that the LAHDC is committed to promote green and pollution free energy by harnessing the immense potential of renewable energy from solar, hydro and other renewable energy sources.
CEC Khan said that the LAHDC Kargil is at present contributing around 4 MW in renewable energy sector and with financial and technical support from the Central Government and the UT Administration Ladakh, concrete measures are being taken to establish solar, hydro and thermal projects in the district. He said that when Zanskar and other renewable energy potential areas will be connected to the Power Grid in future, the district will be in a position to sell power outside and hence can contribute in generating income for UT Ladakh.
Citing the example of Latoo Solar Lift Irrigation Plant as a successful pilot renewable energy project, the CEC said that all out efforts are being made to harness the potential of the green energy sources thus ensuring least dependence on conventional sources of energy.
CEC Feroz Khan further said that keeping in view the immense potential of the tributaries of Drass, Suru, Zanskar, Shingoo and Wakha Stream, 100 feasible sites have been identified which can be developed as mini/small hydro projects and with financial and technical support from the Central Government, enormous amount of power can be generated which will go a long way in making Ladakh self-sufficient in terms of renewable energy, and will also pave way for realization of the goal of Carbon Neutral Ladakh and converting the cold desert into an oasis of green energy.
