Don’t ignore: Signs that show fatty liver is getting worse

The early stages of fatty liver sometimes show no symptoms and may seem harmless. It all begins with the liver accumulating fat that is not adequately broken down as a result of eating too many calories or illnesses like diabetes or high cholesterol, among others. Few people have inflammation or liver damage in the early stages of fatty liver disease, and many never progress to the advanced phases of the condition, where the risks of liver cirrhosis and liver cancer increase.

NO RED FLAGS AT FIRST STAGE

The progression of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is governed by its four stages. Simple fatty liver or steatosis is the first stage. This occurs when the fat in the liver cells begins to accumulate, but there is no inflammation or damage at this stage. At this stage, there are no warning signs, and many people are completely unaware that they have fatty liver. The second stage, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), is not always present in those with fatty liver.

INFLAMMATION AT SECOND STAGE

NAFLD’s non-alcoholic steatohepatitis is its second stage (NASH). As the liver is mending damaged tissue, there is an accumulation of fat in the liver cells as well as inflammation. If there is more injured tissue, the liver may scar and develop fibrosis.

FIBROSIS AT THIRD STAGE

Fibrosis is the third stage of NAFLD. It is noticeable when there is scar tissue in the blood vessels surrounding the liver as well as in the liver itself. Therefore, reducing inflammation may stop future damage from occurring or even partially undo it. It can, however, result in cirrhosis if it is not treated in a timely manner.

CIRRHOSIS AT FOURTH STAGE

Cirrhosis is the fourth stage of NAFLD. At this point, the liver will no longer function at all, and signs and symptoms may include skin that has turned yellow and a dull ache on the lower right side of the ribs. Liver damage may also result, requiring hospitalization and possibly a liver transplant, and may also cause ascites (an abnormal swelling), leg swelling, vomiting-related bleeding, or altered consciousness.

Here are some warning indications of fatty liver that no one should ignore.

  • Loss of appetite for food
  • Yellowish discoloration of the eyes and urine
  • Fullness of the abdomen commonly brought on by fluid accumulation
  • Blood vomiting and black-colored feces.
  • Leg edema and weight loss
  • Disorientation, inappropriate talking, and abnormal mental activity
  • Easy bruisability, which refers to bleeding beneath the skin from minor wounds
